Virginia Just Ratified The Equal Rights Amendment

A look at the history, issues, and legal challenges ahead

On January 15, 2020 Virginia became that 38th state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, passing it in the Senate 28–12 and in the House of Delegates 59–41. Under the U.S. Constitution, amendments become law when they’ve been ratified by at least three-fourths of U.S. state legislatures — in other words, 38 out of 50.
