To act like Autism Speaks doesn’t actually understand autism is just absurd and reflects the fact that some people don’t like autism being treated as a disability — which it absolutely is for millions of people. We worked for 6 years with someone from their legal advocacy group in order to help get insurance reform passed in our state. The help we got from AS was invaluable and the only reasons that anything happened at all. The main contact we worked with had 2 kids on the spectrum and a third with PDD-NOS, which is essentially one step above ASD. Believe me, she knew autism up close and personal!
