This only came about in the past 6-9 thousand years with the advent of patriarchy. Before that, the social system was one of enforced egalitarianism that actively prevented anyone from getting power or throwing their weight around. Resources were shared, the well-being of the group was paramount, even into the early proto-agricultural societies. Some current hunter-gatherer bands still live this way, doing things like insulting the meat brought in by a particularly skilled hunter so that he doesn't get a big head.
