The joke/trope is “If you know one person on the autism spectrum you know… one person on the autism spectrum.” It’s such a wide and diverse thing, which is why it’s a spectrum and not a syndrome. To imagine that any small segment of that speaks for the entire thing is really misguided. There is no unified “autism community” and anyone who claims they speak on behalf of one is not being truthful. And autism is so alienating as it is, to feel unseen even amongst those who ought to seemingly have some greater level of compassion, compounds this even further.
