Thanks for your comments. I appreciate hearing from you although I completely disagree about the White Knight thing. Harassment and bullying can only exist in atmospheres that turn a blind eye to it — which is exactly what’s been going on all of this time. This ad is about co-creating a better society (rather than it coming from some top-down decree); it’s about teaching children through example but also that the only way that we can move towards our best selves (as individuals and as a society) is to challenge ourselves to do better. We must all participate in that — women too, although since we live in a patriarchal society, the actions of men as relates to bullying behavior (of which harassment is one) will necessarily have more impact.
Acting like a White Knight means that you are deciding that only you can save someone. It’s removing their power and agency. But speaking up when you see your friends and your children behaving in anti-social ways is not removing power or agency from the victims. It’s keeping the fabric of society together by doing the right thing in the moment. This is in fact the only thing that currently keeps the dominance hierarchy in any state of check. Otherwise, men like Donald Trump (who is the poster child for what the top of the dominance hierarchy known as patriarchy looks like) would be running more amok than they already are. There would be even greater marginalization and subjugation of those who are weaker in some way. None of us is an island. We have to work together to create a better society.
I’m so glad that the bell hooks book continues to be meaningful for you. It’s on my reading list.
