Some of it comes from not wanting to imagine that something bad could ever happen to us. It must be the victim’s fault in some way otherwise we too are at potential risk. I had a friend who was raped at gunpoint and a bunch of her friends told her how that could never happen to them. It was a really insensitive defense mechanism.

Victim blaming has been a huge problem for a long time, and in a dominance hierarchy that makes sense. It’s the survival of the fittest attitude so it’s kinda your fault if you get victimized. Nevermind how pervasive it is. Anyway, I just got tired of hearing so many people make uneducated assertions around this stuff that I had to put something together.
