So advocating that people don’t tolerate bullying and harassment will lead to more violence? Yeah, that really doesn’t actually make any sense. I do agree that we need to look at the entire social system which is the root of all of this, but the overwhelming majority of violence and harassment in our society is perpetrated by males. We live in a patriarchy — a dominance hierarchy which includes a gender component. To pretend that what is considered appropriate masculinity within that society is not a huge part of the total issue is naive and ineffective. You’ve spoken to it yourself by naming some of the masculine characters that are lionized in media.

If you go through the motions of smiling — upturning your mouth and relaxing the muscles in your face, you do actually begin to feel happier.

Going through the motions of speaking up in the face of bullying and harassment is not the only remedy for our culture, but it is a viable and meaningful piece of a larger picture.
