Monogamy is a sociological construct that comes out of patriarchal cultures. That doesn’t mean that people can’t choose that for themselves or that non-monogomy doesn’t pose some issues (it certainly can) but Peterson’s assertion that it’s evolved because it’s what’s needed to keep society from descending into chaos is just more of his baseless projecting of his own fears and biases. There are some current societies where there is no institutional marriage who manage to do just fine. http://mentalfloss.com/article/31274/6-modern-societies-where-women-literally-rule
I’ll look for the book you mention — sounds interesting. Another good book on all of this is Sacred Pleasure: Sex, Myth and the Politics of the Body by Riane Eisler.
