In a BDSM scene details and parameters have been talked about and agreed to by both parties beforehand. In the case of fiction, that may not be the case or that part of the story might not be illuminated — perhaps because it’s reflecting a fantasy. Rape fantasy is also common, but that doesn’t mean that most women want to be actually raped. The idea of power imbalances can be very steamy indeed, but only when they’ve been agreed to.

It’s a somewhat pernicious mischaracterization that consent-based sex has to be sterile and contractual or that there can be no sexual tension if you go in that direction. And yet, kink culture demonstrates that isn’t the case at all. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.
