If you only care about yourself (not you personally, but one), then yes, those issues don’t affect you much. If you care about the society that you live in and how people you might even potentially care about are affected, then it does matter to you if there is blatant injustice going on. Personally, my empathy is not predicated on whether or not something affects me directly. I’m not trying to speak to your level of empathy — only to speak to the question that you posed.
I’m sorry to inform you that STEM is notoriously sexist. It’s been widely studied and there’s been a huge amount written about it.
The issue is dominance hierarchy, and globalization or more women in the workforce isn’t going to address the deep-seated need to rise by stepping on the necks of others who are seen to be lower down the rungs to start with.
