I so agree. I’ve been legally married to my man for 26 years, but in the past 4–5 I’ve started to refer to him most of the time as my partner. That’s because we are no longer monogamous and have a totally different kind of relationship than when we were. We’re a lot happier now that we’ve had to really sort through who we are and what we really want from all kinds of relationships, instead of just plugging in to “husband” and “wife.”

And, I’m not entirely thrilled with the word partner either. It seems to belie the fact that we are still committed for life and have a child together. It somehow comes across as less permanent. Time for some new words/terms indeed!
