Hi Nick — I think you are completely missing the point. It doesn’t matter whether or not she is single if she is not interested. A man should accept that as a valid response and she shouldn’t have to resort to “I belong to someone else” for that to be respected. Fairly literal ownership of women by men isn’t that far in the distant past. Up until the early 1990s not all US states had marital rape laws. In other words, a husband was entitled to his wife’s body, whether she consented or not. That’s ownership right there and the point of the article is that these ideas are still in the subtext, because they are not that far in our past. Most men don’t go around thinking, “I have a right to her just because I like what I see,” but for many men that is in the subconscious background. Having awareness that this is in play is a part of how we start to change it. The point is not that men are horrible animals; the point is that 5K years of programming cannot be overcome unless you do it consciously and intentionally.
