Because that feels vulnerable, and many people hate to feel that way, particularly men, who have been taught that it's weak (rather than the true show of courage that it is.) Being able to apologize readily and freely is a mark of maturity and strength.

But still, why wouldn’t you say “I’m sorry” when you know you hurt someone?
