As a former “good girl” I really appreciated this article. I’ve worked hard to move away from that and to not become the adult version of that — “the nice lady.” I once said that if anyone every called me that, I’d kick them in the shins. I’m a very nice person, but I am definitely not “a nice lady.”

I agree that we have to learn to stand up and create more meaningful lives for ourselves, but the difficulty of this is compounded when women (and girls) try to do so and then get punished for it. We need to keep having compassion for those who are fighting against the tide, with greater or lesser degress of success, while at the same time encouraging them to persevere.
